Pepsi's 20 Million Dollar Social Media Campaign

Pepsi has decided to axe their Super Bowl ad campaign for Super Bowl XLIV in Miami, Florida this year. Instead they are dumping 20 million dollars in to a Social Media Marketing campaign. The move by Pepsi exemplifies the major shift in advertising dollars that we have seen develop over the past year. As corporations large and small continue to pull advertising dollars from traditional markets like television, newspaper, and print, we are seeing these funds relocated to online campaigns that engage customers and allow for advanced statistical tracking. This marks the first year in 23 years that Pepsi has not developed an ad for the Super Bowl.

Voice Recognition with the Google Mobile App

Matt Cutts of Google recently released a video on the Google Mobile App which uses voice recognition to return Google search results. The application is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Nokia S60 and Android phones. The voice recognition system appears to work very well for Matt in the video below. Most voice recognition systems have been frustrating to say the least. I know I have had my fair share of frustration with the 1-800-GOOG-411 phone system.

I was surprised and very pleased to read the front page of the business section of todays Times Colonist newspaper based out of Victoria British Columbia. The title "Social networking boosts bottom line" brought a smile to my face. The subtitle "Blogs pay off by enhancing websites and communicating with customers" just made me more excited. It's great to know that old media is recognizing the upside to new media. More and more these days the two are coming together and people are embracing the web and all it has to offer.
