This is meant to be a Mafia Wars guide for the beginner through intermediate players. Experts will know most of this and more of the finer details. This Mafia Wars primer is full of tips and tricks meant to help ease your journey to become a top mafia player. You should be using Firefox or Google Chrome to play Mafia Wars. Be wary of the pink warnings heed them and discontinue the action that caused the pink warning for 24 hours. Lets all have fun using all the tips and tricks. Grow the Family
If your enemy's mafia is larger than yours, odds are he will win in a fight, even if you are a higher level. If their mafia is smaller, odds are you will win again even if your level is lower than the enemy. Grow your mafia to 501 and then keep adding.Your mafia size should be the equivalent of your level or larger. Unlike fights (up to 501) the amount of mafia members that can help is equal to your level. Having less mafia members then your level you are a target having more members you become a less attractive target.
Ensure your mafia is equipped
Mafia members are only as strong as the weapons, armor and transport you give them. Make sure every mafia member has the best weapons, armors, and vehicles you can afford. This only applies until you reach 501 and then it is only important to keep up with Mafia Mikes and special weapons offered on the home page.
Level up as fast as you can players at higher levels pick on the weaker. Why? Because it is not worth the stamina. Fighting yields more experience and has a chance to drop the best weapons, vehicles, and job items that players need.
Players do jobs for money rather than rob. If you are powering up you will find it hard to keep your mafia size equal to your level. The solution is simple - if you can't keep your mafia size equal to your level add your self to one of the many email lists or work the forums for adding members.
You will get hit listed and robbed frequently if you anger other players. Now you may or may not mind this depending on your playing style. Be warned grudge matches occur often.
Increase the Wealth. It is best to plan purchases before or during jobs so that you do not have to use banked money as it is already hit by the ten % fee, save bank funds for rainy days.
Using Points Strategically means planning to use energy packs after you have leveled up and used your allotted points.

You can play up to 50 tickets a week. You get one free ticket every day, and you may buy tickets for 5 godfather points each. Simple math says it takes quite some time to collect the full lotto collection set, for an unkown reward . None of the other rewards that exist are that large, while 1000 godfather points looks good (apparently doled out at a meager 10 a week), the odds of matching all 5 are akin to winning the real lottery.
Bank your money in Cuba
The fastest way to earn pesos in Cuba is to fight other mafia..So fight and buy some business on Mafia wars Cuba.
When you are injured in a fight, don't go to hospital on Mafia wars Cuba. To save Pesos fly back to NY and heal.

The best way to win easy fights is to find a weak player and attack them over and over however this can lead to retaliation. It is better to find an inactive weak player. Many people quit playing mafia wars but do not close their accounts. If you attack an inactive player, you don't have to worry about retaliation by one of their bigger friends.
Inactive players are low in level, have small mafias, and no recent collectibles items. The only way to know for sure is to attack the person and look at the fight report. In the report you may see a few old collectable weapons used then you have probably found an inactive player.
You will see that attacking even low level players results in good item drops. You should also double check by checking that the inactive player does not start leveling up by watching their profile page.
Now instead of risky hit and miss attacks you have your own weak punching bag. You may also bookmark the attack link allowing a fast use of stamina by hitting refresh against an easy target that will never retaliate.
Do not waste time spending God Father Points on God Father rewards as they are not any better than off the shelf items.

Summary
Best advice is to increasing your Mafia size to 501 and beyond, making sure your mafia is well equipped. In your profile add points in Attack, Defense, and by spending Godfather points on stats to add to the same, you can be sure to increase your chances of winning. However, you will never win 100% of fights Top Mafia have a chance to always win on defense and attack. Critical hits infrequently occur and always cause a loss even from lower level and smaller mafias.

my play style
well i don't spend most of my skill points on energy,i mostly spend it on attack and defence i am at level 92 with combine attack 22000 attack and 28560 def and i can beat beat many players who r 200 level above me :P and my energy is 192 lol i know its very low but whos cares i love to fight and i asked my mafia to gift me all those things which i havent found yet,and one thing more i have 1500 + mafia members most of them above level 200.

Mafia Wars is huge , it is been played by about 4 million of people & keep on growing.
I love to play Mafia Wars too and actively recruiting and building up my mafia family.
This game is very addictive however you need a guide to help you advance to higher level.

Concerns About "Open Recruitment"
I'm not certain if it actually makes a difference or not, but I was actually one of the more balanced players. I focused a lot of my profile points on energy, but also tried to keep attack and defense strong, but not too strong (maybe a 20 energy to 1 attack/defense ratio, but that is just a guess). In any case, I also spent a great deal of time recruiting others to my mafia (more than 4,000 to date). The concern that I now have with recruiting so many members is that many of them are lower level players, who don't understand the value of good weapons, armor, etc, and since I can't choose which 501 mafia come to fight with me, I often find myself on the losing side of a fight that I should have won. I think the key to mafia growth should be centered around recruitment of legitimate players (say, level 100 and above), rather than getting the casual player or newbie who might drag you down. With 4,000 or more mafia, it just isn't practical to figure out who is weak, and send them weapons to improve their character. Any thoughts???
20 energy to 1 atk/def is a
20 energy to 1 atk/def is a very weak character. That will help you level fast but you will not be able to fight or defend yourself except against much lower level players. Your large mafia makes you look stronger than you are, camoflaging your true weakness. That will work for a while but it will catch up with you.

This post shows a misunderstanding of how Mafia Wars works. It doesn't amtter which of your 4000 mafia is used. It's your equipment and Attack/Def that matters, not theirs. The attack formula is Your mafia (501 max) x (Your Atk + Your Def) + Your best equipment (max 501 of each type). To clarify another point in this site, Attack & Defense make more difference than equipment. The best piece of equipment in the game only has about 68 points. It's not hard to overwhelm that with higher stats. I agree that it is critical to get your mafia over 501 ASAP. Don't wait for equipment.
They will increase your combat power right away even if they don't play and you have no equipment for them. (There is conterversy about whether equipment is just attck vs your opponants defense or if it's combined Atk + def. The evidence supports the latter although Zynga claims the former.)
I don't quite agree.
I leveled up very quickly, pouring everything into energy up through level 500. I didn't concentrate on getting a big mafia until I hit level 500. I mastered all of Cuba in one or two days. By level 500, I had 400 mafia members, 500 TNT, 500 Guerilla Squads, 500 Gaff Hooks, 500 Attack Helicopters, and 500 Armored State Cars. Sure, I got beat up on the way up, but I easily gathered more experience than the 6 each time I lost when I die. I don't need to defend my properties because money isn't important. I get a lot more money by just doing all the jobs rather than properties.
I first got enough energy than I figured I'd want for the first 800 levels. After that, I put it into stamina and followed that up with attack, then defense. I'm now over level 600 and still easily leveling. I slowed myself down just to make sure I had all the items and mafia I wanted. Sure, I used to get beat by people who were 200 levels below me, but some of those same people were attacking me when I was 100 levels below them. Now, I'm hundreds of levels above them and can beat them almost all the time. And I'm not at all done improving the character. And no, I didn't buy any reward points....I just played the game and enjoyed.

Leveling up "as fast as you can" has been a large topic for debate amongst mafia wars players. Depending on why you play the game, leveling fast is not always a good thing. Growing your mafia fast is more important. Having 501 or more is more important than your level. Average experience points earned at 5 points a piece for Capo assists is 20 points an hour for 2,000 mafia members.
Players that level fast by putting all of their points into energy to complete the jobs find themselves getting slaughtered by much lower level players because the game is designed for fighting and robbing, not around the jobs. The jobs play out. There is nothing in New York past Boss and nothing past El Padrino in Cuba. So for a player who levels up at a fast rate by completing the jobs will find they will lose to much lower level players because of the difference in game play. After the jobs are completed, the only option left is to fight and rob. For a high energy player, they will chronically lose to levels 200-300 levels lower.
The thing is to have a well balanced character. Place as much emphasis on garnering attack and defense points as you do on energy and stamina. Balance is the nature of the game. A well balance character is able to attack another player and defend an attack with little or no difficulty once they hit the open fight list at level 180. Every single player plays the game differently
