Boobs cause earthquakes, apparently.
An Iranian cleric has discovered the source of all devastating earthquakes. No, it isn't plate tectonics. Not even close. It turns out women's lack of modesty and tight-fitting clothes are at the epicenter of catastrophic earth trembles. According to Kazem Sedighi in an article in the Chicago Tribune, "Many women who do not dress modestly lead young men astray and spread adultery in society which increases earthquakes." It all makes sense now! His solution, "What can we do to avoid being buried under the rubble? There is no other solution but to take refuge in religion and to adapt our lives to Islam's moral codes," he said.
To test this claim scientifically, university student Jen McCreight started a Facebook event called Boobquake calling on women of the world to wear their most "cleavagey" top Monday April 26th, 2010. At the time of writing, the event has nearly 300,000 participants and 67,000 potential participants. Even a Twitter hashtag (#boobquake) has been in widespread use to generate awareness about the event.
In her blog, Blag Hag, McCreight stated, "So what started as a joke and somewhat sarcastic reply to the ludicrous notion that women's immodesty causes earthquakes has now exploded. Seriously, internet, you scare and amaze me sometimes."
She's right. Initiated over social networks, the power of the internet has caused Boobquake to hit the mainstream media, with t-shirts and merchandise available.
McCreight has initiated a phenomenon doing exactly what Sedighi tried to counter with women all over the world participating in this event. None of this would have been possible without the reach of social media.
